"Estorbo Público” is an immersive performance in which a group of dancers perform a movement practice that parallels the struggles of the Puerto Rican population. Abandoned buildings plague the island as foreign investors purchase land and buildings to turn a profit, erasing these spaces’ utility to the local population who are often living without accessible libraries or hospitals. This performance will explore the idea of political squatting, the tactic that, as of recent, some Puerto Ricans have turned to as a viable practice to face the egregious systematic displacement of natives from the land.
We treated the performance space as a living being, thereby shining light on the systems of care required to heal the destruction of the Puerto Rican social landscape.
